RETA JEAN WOODWARD 1940-2017

As most of you know Jean Woodward, a 21 year member of our Mt. Baker Singles, passed away on January 26 in Mount Vernon at age 76.  Jean enjoyed her square dancing hobby and served as our club president for 2 years, V.P. for two years and as a club director for 8 years.  Serious health issues had kept her off the dance floor the last few years but she often visited our Tuesday evening dance program when she was able.  Jean’s support and sharp wit will be missed.

CLUB NEWS

Our club board of directors voted to make memorial donations to the Square & Folk Dance Federation of Washington Heritage Center in Spokane for both Don Olson and Jean Woodward of $25 each.  Their names will be placed on a brass plate and added to the Memorial Board in the Heritage Center.  Our club membership stands at 30 with the loss of these two members.

Thanks to Gini Johnson we now have a full slate of officers nominated for the 2017-18 season.  Our current officers will continue if reelected.

CARAVAN TO FOGCUTTERS — MARCH 3

Our caravan to the Fogcutters is scheduled for March 3 at the Skagit Valley Grange.  Pre-rounds start at 7:30 pm with Bob Berka cueing.  John Corrigan will be calling at 8 pm.  Although they are a plus club their dance will be modified for mainstream dancers so all of us can enjoy a fun evening.  After two tips of mainstream dancing there will be a plus tip.  Several mainstream clubs plan to travel in so it will be a big dance.

If we have eight members attending we can borrow their club banner.  We won’t carpool since they dance at our same grange hall. We’ll see you there.

TUESDAY EVENING DANCING – MARCH 7

We graduated eight new dancers on January 24 and several continue to dance with us on Tuesdays.  There are currently about a dozen students in our new January beginners group so we continue to have four or more squares on the floor regularly.  It makes for a fun filled full house so join us when your schedule allows.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING – MARCH 10

Our annual general membership meeting will be held on March 10 at 6:30 pm at the Skagit Valley Grange.  The top item is the election of club officers for 2017-18.  (Note the early start time of 6:30 pm.)  This is our current list of nominations:  Gini Johnson as president, John & Candy Johnson for V.P., Brenda Blanchette for secretary and Vikki Royal for treasurer.  Additional nominations are encouraged and will be accepted from the floor.

Other issues can be brought up so plan to attend!

33RD ANNIVERSARY DANCE – MARCH 10
Dave and Bonnie Harry’s “a-live sound” will be featured at the MT. BAKER SINGLES’ 33rd Anniversary Dance on March 10 at the Skagit Valley Grange on Cook Road.  Pre-rounds start at 7:30 pm with Bob and Linda Berka cueing.  Square dancing starts at 8:00 pm.  The Rainbow Squares and Happy Hoppers will be joining us to celebrate and enjoy some anniversary cake.  Past presidents will be invited to join us for a group picture.  Come and enjoy Dave and Bonnie’s two person band!  (As a side note this is Dave’s 30th year calling for us.)

Greeters:  Mikaela Stahl & Yvonne Struthers
Kitchen:  John & Candy Johnson

BOARD MEETING — MARCH 14

The club board meets March 14 at 6 pm at the Mount Vernon Senior Center.

LOOKING AHEAD

On April 29 the Mt. Baker Spring Council Dance “Dance through the Decades” will be held from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at the Stanwood Middle School.  The Rainbow Squares are hosting this dance. The BC Boys and a Girl are handling the calling and cueing.  Callers are Brent Mawdsley, Ray Brendzy and Steve Edlund.  Pre-rounds start at 7 pm with Heather Wallace Reynolds cueing. There will be mainstream dancing from 7:30 to 10 pm.  John Hayes has tickets for $8 each if you are interested.  They will be $10 at the door.  See their flyers for details.

On June 16 and 17 the Washington State Square Dance Festival will be held in Spokane Valley at the Spokane Fair & Expo Center located at 404 N Havana St.  Featured caller is Mike Seastrom from CA and cuers are TJ & Bruce Chadd from ID. This one is a long haul from here but these dances are always fun.
